The Northern Ohio Golf Association (NOGA) office received a 100 – plus telephone calls in the past year on a golf course being built along the turnpike. Owner Joe Salemi designed the golf course that caught the imagination of every golfer that drove the turnpike between exits 13 and 14. We received periodic updates, with statements like “You can’t believe it” to “Can’t wait until opens” to “Challenging”, to “Absolutely beautiful setting”, and”Never saw anything better”.
Salemi took on a project that other only fantasized about. They often wondered how one could build a golf course without a golf architect, without a golf course construction company and without lawyers or environmental consultants? But Salemi did just that.
Salemi will be the first to tell you that without people like Matt and Chris Loos, Dick and Eric Pesallis, and the entire construction crew, it would not have happened. The city of Streetsboro was also very cooperative, and that led to the project’s success.
Salemi studied the writings of Ross, Tillinghast, MacKenzie, Dye, and others. From those books, he obtained considerable knowledge on course routing and the voluminous intricacies of an architect’s responsibilities. However, as Salemi says, “He would never do this again.”
Furthermore, he found a perfect piece of property for a golf course, Yet, as Salemi pointed out, “You get one chance, don’t screw it up.”
Putting together rolling terrain, 100 foot elevation change, an island green, trees (pines, maples, oaks, tulip, ash, cherry, black walnut) seven trees, large 7500 sq. ft. greens, G\2 Bent Grass Greens, a peninsula green, sandy soil, and even a waterfall and you have it all.
Nine holes opened June 15th, with the full 18 ready for play by August , 2002. NOGA has scheduled its two-man scramble tournament at Boulder Creek G.C. for September 19th, 2002.
